Forestry & Natural Resources

Forestry and natural resources are governed in Bhutan within a strong conservation framework. The Constitution requires that a substantial share of the country remain under forest cover, and that mandate shapes every project that touches forest land or natural resources. Forestry and natural resource activity is regulated under the Forest and Nature Conservation framework and associated rules, with permitting, sustainable-use requirements and conservation conditions. Projects with an environmental footprint require clearance involving the National Environment Commission, which also participates in foreign investment compliance monitoring, and resource-based ventures must align with national conservation policy in order to obtain and retain their approvals.

Basnet Attorneys & Law advises on permits and conservation compliance, the structuring of sustainable forestry and resource projects, foreign direct investment registration, supply and offtake contracts, and disputes. We combine energy, mining and infrastructure advisory with legal compliance and regulatory advisory capability, helping clients design natural resource ventures that satisfy Bhutan's conservation mandate while remaining commercially workable.
